| Monday, June 14, 2004 thus ends our youth, and hence forth begins of the rest of our lives. over 1 month of training, sacrifices, compromises, aching bodies and hearts, fear, trepiditaion, and finally determination has culminated in this: 2h 46min of adrenaline pumping madness. and so veni, vidi, vici. and in what fashion too: a throughly deserving win by a margin of a massive 29 minutes. even against senior opposition, we did ourselves proud, our timing good enough to qualify us for a fourth placing in the NUS category, and even a top 10 placing in the open category. ah, but what of the evidence of our win? the medals, the trophies... no- the real winners need no outward display of success. the win is in our hearts, as would always be. the name "team hungry dino" will go down in history, no matter how big or small. we shall see. personally though, victory is bittersweet. the sacrifice of time is painful, no doubt. but what is most painful is the day-after feelings: the cessation of all excitement and antipication. all that remains to do is to take solace (how?) in textbooks, lecture notes, ten year serieses... and for me, the manner by which we won, too. the opposition seemed to literally open the way for us to win. where were the desperate sprint finishes, the neck in neck challenges? no... it almost seemed to easy. we were almost too good. too good for our own category, not nearly good enough for the big boys. caught in this uninspiring, unchallenging limbo. where to go from here? i did not feel pushed... i did not unleash a new level of physical/mental endurance... i just ran my race like i planned i would, and took home the gold. where's the real pleasure in that? enough of me though... it was a good race no doubt. every segment was done superbly well, thats where the 29 mins came from. the bike sprinting, the running, the trail biking, the abseiling/jumarring, the archery, the climbing, the kayaking... in almost all of these disciplines, we performed at the very least near our maximum proficiency. yes, chew will be cursing himself for not sprinting faster on the bike; pock for the two panels he missed during climbing; me for the wasted arrows at archery; me and pock for not sprinting the trail section; mingheng for not flying down the abseil rope ala "idontvaluemylifemuchthesedays" chew; me and mingheng for crucially overshooting the first buoy at kayaking and wasting valuable seconds; me for the navigational errors at springfield sec; the whole team for not pushing that 1/2/3 km per hour faster during the running parts despite the cramps, the stitches, the pain... still, what are the small minor personal failures in the light of the huge successes? the whole team ran for every part of the race- how many teams can honestly say they did that? pock: dont count the panels u missed, count instead the panels u completed. dont be ashamed of the cramps, be proud that u ran on despite of them. where would the team be without your organisational and logistical prowess? chew: be proud of your biking. for your bike's standard and your experience, u were good. remember your moment of glory: flying down the abseil rope. despite your injury u trained doubly hard when u could and came back extra strong. mingheng: no u are NOT the weakest link. i respect u as a teammate for many reasons- for putting up with our nonsense, for having the worst bike (and not to mention ironballs), for not showing any form of displeasure during the trainings or the race. this victory is yours as much as any of ours. your, my friend, are a true blue hungry dino... dont discredit yourself with anything less. of course not forgetting jayce: aka team manager aka chairman of THD fanclub. despite what u think, u contributed a lot. yes u did. moral support and logistics. pity u cannot share in the glory. thanks for everything. team hungry dino: this was our race. we have stamped our authority on the adventure racing scene in singapore- im going to be so bold as to say its only a matter of time before we become team salomon hungry dino. or TPHD , as jayce/pock would prefer ;) as a team, we have lived by many mottos. "impossible is nothing." "tough times dont last, tough men do." "for the win, guys." "glorious in victory, honourable in defeat." the one that will stay in my heart always is the one that was resounded through pasir ris park 5 mins before flag off: "only one way... ALL THE WAY". all the way indeed. the prizes? it is but an added reward to the glory. everytime i glance at the ironman triathalon on my wrist, im reminded of two things: one, of the hard work we put in, and two, of the friends i have. in all sincerety, thanks, chew. so it has come to pass that a certain team hungry dino aimed high, trained hard, played hard and took home the gold. the team was happy for awhile, and miserable after that cos they had to mug. ;) ah well. thus ends our youth, and hence forth begins the rest of our lives.
